for Falling Block Jam 2025

Controls:

⬅️➡️ Move block left/right
⬇️ Slow drop
⭕️ [Z or C] Rotate block clockwise
❎ [X or V] Rotate block counter-clockwise
[P or Enter] Pause Menu and options...

Gameplay:

Move the current block like it's Tetris... but it's not, the rules of Rock Paper Scissors apply, a quick recap just in case:

  • Rocks beat Scissors
  • Scissors cut Paper
  • Paper wraps Rocks

Now this doesn't only apply when you drop a block onto others but you can hit single elements of your block on elements that they can beat while your block keeps going. For this reason there's no instant drop button.

Unlike Tetris the Rotation of the block is 45 degrees. It will look super weird initially and in case you can set Rotation to 90°... But trust me, 45° allows you more 'shape-shifting' powers and control over the block especially for precise maneuvers to stick you block inside narrow passages.

So.. what remains of Tetris?  Yes, you can remove entire rows (of a same type!) like Tetris for good scores and even more points if:

  • ⭐The height of the row matters, higher rows score gradually more points
  • ⭐⭐Even more if multiple rows are removed at once

Music:

For most of the tunes I've rearranged in Pico-8 bits of music from an old C64 game called "Lazy Jones" (in my todo list of C64 games to demake in Pico-8) and the music was by the brilliant David Whittaker (genius and he made an impressive amount of soundtracks for home computer games).

I'm also curious to know about MUSIC: was it too distracting/intense?

Fun idea! It should probably say in the instructions that the row needs to be all of the same kind to break. (I thought it was broken at first.)

I agree with others who have said it's too easy, but I think it's got a lot of potential! You could give bonus points for clearing all of one color, and for clearing the entire board. As for making it harder, one thing I thought of would be to have 2 or 3 different colors of each type. So only blue scissors would cut blue paper. Dunno.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Yes this time I probably kept gameplay too simple. Oh and about the "game is too easy" I would be so glad and curious to see a recording of your playthrough? I start to suspect I'm the noobiest of tetris players lol

Oh and OOps yes I forgot to mention the row must be of the same type thanks! I'm editing

neat concept. I think it would be served well by having gravity on 'orphan' pieces

Yes I agree it'd look good visually and coherent with the physics (and the Falling Blocks theme)... but it will greatly impact gameplay and strategy because you often need suspended blocks especially if you plan on completing higher rows.
